This year, the Four River Film Festival continues with its educational programs! Given that we are still in strange times, we adapted the lectures to the epidemiological measures, so our guests, as well as high school teachers, had the opportunity to participate in four lectures, some in person, some online. We present the first two educational programs in this issue of Bottle Daily!
IGOR JURILJ – Film as a coloring book
Igor Jurilj is a film enthusiast, illustrator and animator, who started his film career at Cinema Club Karlovac. To this day, he remains a great friend of Karlovac and the Four River Film Festival, so this year, he gave a lecture called Film as a coloring book. After the lecture, Igor made a summary of the lecture for the readers of Bottle Daily!
– Colour is one of the filmic means of expression, analogous to the figures in a literary text. But in addition to it being a stylistic figure, colour is also a part of the film narrative as one of the nonverbal elements with the potential to define, shape, or direct the plot and the story. The masterclass on colour in film focuses on colour as a predetermined element of film photography, while to a lesser extent it analyzes colour used in post-production to highlight color palette philosophy and emphasize its importance in shaping an atmosphere, evoking emotions and activating thought processes in the viewer. Film directors, along with their directors of photography, costume designers, make-up artists, editors, but also screenwriters, use the range of visible colours according to their own ambitions and styles, but we can still categorize them according to schemes and palettes made to complete the story of the film. At the same time, we see that managing colour in film does not have universal settings, but depends on the cultural circle of the director, as well as the cultural circle of the viewer. It is the cultural context that will determine the possibilities and the scope of understanding of the non-verbal levels of film and thus make colour either a mere decoration or a powerful socio-political weapon used by directors such as Stanley Kubrick, Krzysztof Kieślowski or Spike Jonze.
DANILO STANIMIROVIĆ – From a pitch to a premiere
Once a contestant, today a festival guest! Danilo Stanimirović, a young director from Požarevac, came to the Festival to show his short film Bambiland, whose screenplay won the Pack & Pitch at Four River Film Festival three years ago. A few hours before the screening, Danilo held an online lecture called From a pitch to a premiere. Danilo gave a statement about this educational program for the Bottle Daily readers, and in another article you can read an interview with him, in which he reveals everything about his film Bambiland!
– The educational program was the best part of the festival for me. This was my first time giving a lecture and it was very exciting, I liked being a lecturer. During the lecture I spoke about the process of working on a film, from the creation of an idea to the distribution and guest appearances at festivals. I would love to go in this direction one day, to teach somewhere, talk about film and educate people.
